Sawgrass Players Club lies west of A1A around TPC Sawgrass, a mile or more back from the beach. That distance changes the diagnosis in a way that surprises owners who have moved here from the oceanfront side of Ponte Vedra Beach: the salt problem eases considerably, and what is left is the appliance and the kitchen it was installed into.
What a full suite asks of a kitchen
The houses here are large and most of them were built or renovated with a complete Thermador suite — a cooktop, a wall oven, a steam oven, a dishwasher, a coffee system and column refrigeration, all in one room. A suite makes demands of the room that no single appliance does, and a good share of the calls we take here turn out to be about the room.
Electrical comes first. Built-ins expect dedicated circuits at their specified rating rather than a shared one. A kitchen that was wired for a range and a refrigerator and later filled with a suite will run all of it perfectly well most of the time, and then behave strangely when several appliances call together: a zone that drops out while the oven is preheating, a dishwasher that stops mid-cycle on a Saturday evening. Those symptoms follow the household’s habits rather than the appliance’s, which is a genuinely useful clue and one only the owner can give us.
Plumbing comes second, and it is easy to forget how much of it there is. A dishwasher, a coffee system and an ice maker each have their own supply, and each has a shut-off that may not have been turned since the day it was fitted. Where a remodel rerouted a line, the feed is not always where the owner believes it is. Establishing where the water comes from and where it can be stopped is part of a first visit, before anything is disconnected.
Ventilation comes third. A large kitchen puts the cooktop further from an exterior wall, and a long horizontal duct run with several elbows loses airflow to friction on the day it is installed and loses more each year as grease condenses inside it. An owner who has cleaned the filters and still cannot clear steam from a rangetop is usually looking at the wrong end of the system.
Entertaining loads
The houses here are used for entertaining, and that changes wear patterns rather than failure modes. A dishwasher that runs three cycles on a Saturday and none on a Tuesday puts the same annual load through the machine as a steadier household, but concentrates it — the heater, the drain pump and the door seal all see their year’s work in bursts.
The practical consequence is that faults surface at the worst moment. A machine that has been slowly losing heater performance will complete a cycle fine on a quiet weeknight and stretch to four hours on the night you have people in. The underlying degradation was months old; the cycle simply has to reach temperature before it will advance, and it waits.
Scheduling around tournament week
The Players Championship is held at TPC Sawgrass in March, and the build-out and traffic management around it start well before the first round. Access into and around the Players Club during that period is slower than usual, parking near the course is constrained, and our route times through the neighbourhood stretch accordingly.
If you want an appliance right before you have guests for tournament week, book it in February. We can still work during the tournament, but the visit window gets wider and the drive between calls gets longer, and neither of those helps anybody.
What we bring to a first visit here
Because the appliance is usually the appliance here, the first job is to separate it from its installation. On refrigeration that means the intake, the exhaust, the condenser fan and the fin pack before any thought of a sealed system. On cooking and dishwashing it means running the machine and measuring what it actually does — a thermometer on the centre rack from cold, a wash arm held up to the light and its open holes counted — rather than accepting the symptom as the diagnosis. The control board is tested last, because it is the part most often blamed and least often at fault.
Then the part. Photograph the rating plate before you call: two appliances that look identical from the front can take different components depending on when they were made, and the serial number settles it. With that we check availability before the van is loaded.
