The column, the wall oven, the dishwasher, the coffee system: each one is trimmed into cabinetry, carried on rails or brackets, and wired or plumbed behind a panel that is not meant to be opened twice. What can be found out about a Thermador built-in depends first on what can be reached.
What this coast does to a kitchen
The order a technician works in matters more than the tools he arrives with. On a refrigeration call we establish the air path before anything else — intake, exhaust, condenser fan, fin pack — because a column that cannot reject its heat produces the same complaint as one that has lost refrigerant, and only one of those needs a sealed system opened. On a cooking or dishwashing call we confirm what the appliance is actually doing, with a thermometer or a cycle run, before any part is condemned. The control board is tested last, not first, because a board is the part most often blamed and least often at fault.
Within sight of the Atlantic, onshore wind carries salt into every condenser fin pack, every exterior wall cap and every hinge pivot. A refrigerator running warm here is usually rejecting heat into a blocked fin pack rather than losing refrigerant. Salt also reaches the places nobody inspects: damper pivots that stop opening fully, so extraction weakens without the blower ever sounding different, and terminal blocks inside remote blower housings that bloom green and go intermittent.
Then there is the weather. This coast has had multi-day outages in living memory — Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017, Helene in 2024 — and control boards are far more often damaged than destroyed: the oven still heats but the fan will not run, the refrigerator cools but the ice maker never calls for water. Inverter-driven compressors and their drive boards can fail weeks after the event that hurt them, long enough for nobody to connect the two. If a fault started on a stormy afternoon or after the power came back, that changes where we look first.
Access is the other half of the estimate, and it is honest to say so before the visit. A column is heavy, runs on rails, and has to come forward far enough to reach its service panel without touching the stone beside it. A dishwasher is trimmed into a run and plumbed behind the cabinet next to it. A wall oven is a two-person lift out of a stack. Where a kitchen has been refreshed around an appliance — flooring laid over a toe-kick vent, a grille fitted flush, a soffit closing a top exhaust — the repair may be the installation rather than the part.

The upper oven display went dark while the lower one carried on working. Rather than sell me a control board he checked the ribbon connection first, found it corroded from a leak above and cleaned and reseated it. Fine ever since.
The dishwasher left grit on the top rack in every load. He pulled the filter housing, found the upper wash arm partly blocked and one bearing worn through. He cleared the arm, fitted the bearing, and the top rack comes out clean.
