Hollow cubes and a stalled harvest

An ice maker fails in a fixed order, and the cubes in the bin tell you how far along it is before anybody opens the appliance.

An ice maker is a device for separating water from everything dissolved in it. It takes a measured fill, freezes the water, and ejects the result. Whatever was dissolved in the water does not leave with the ice — some of it stays in the mould, and some of it stays in the valve and tube that delivered the fill.

An ice maker does that several litres a day, every day, for years, so it is always somewhere on a known progression — and the cubes in the bin say where. That makes it the one appliance in the kitchen that publishes its own condition without being asked.

Stage one: hollow, with a cloudy core

The first component to change is the fill valve. Its orifice is small by design, because the fill quantity is set by time rather than by volume — the valve opens for a fixed period and the mould receives whatever flows in that period.

As mineral narrows the orifice, less water arrives in the same time. The mould underfills. The freeze cycle is unchanged, so the shell forms normally and there is not enough water behind it to complete the cube, which produces the classic hollow cube with a thin wall and a cloudy centre.

The cloudiness is a second, independent signal. Clear ice forms when freezing is slow enough for dissolved solids and air to be pushed ahead of the freeze front. An underfilled mould freezes faster, traps them, and the cube goes opaque.

At this stage the fix is straightforward and the machine is otherwise healthy.

Stage two: cubes that will not release

Next the mould surface changes. Deposit on it does two things: it insulates, so the freeze takes longer, and it roughens, so the ice keys into the surface instead of releasing from it.

The harvest heater then has to work longer to free the cube. Sometimes it does, and you get a partially melted, refrozen cube. Sometimes it does not, and the harvest arm meets a cube still bonded to the mould. Repeated stalls are hard on the harvest motor, which is why an ice maker left in this condition tends to fail mechanically rather than gradually.

Stage three: fused slabs and a sheet of ice below

By the time cubes are arriving as a single fused mass, two things are usually happening at once.

The fill has become slow enough that water is standing in the fill tube between cycles rather than clearing it. Standing water in a tube that passes through a freezer compartment freezes, so the next fill arrives late, partially, or over the outside of the mould rather than into it. Water that misses the mould runs down, freezes below, and builds the sheet of ice under the bin that owners describe as the freezer leaking.

A stalled harvest arm adds to it: cubes that never eject sit and sinter together into a slab.

What is not the cause

Two things get blamed and are usually innocent.

The first is the water filter. A refrigerator filter is a taste and particulate filter. Changing it is worth doing on its own schedule and will not change any of the above.

The second is the freezer temperature. If the freezer column beside the affected one is holding perfectly, the sealed system is not your problem — you have a water-path fault in an appliance whose refrigeration is working.

What we do

We check the fill valve and the fill quantity first, then the mould and the harvest mechanism, then the fill tube. Each of those is a different part with a different price, and the cube tells us which one to reach for before the appliance is opened.

The supply line is worth establishing at the same visit. An ice maker is fed by a small line run during the installation and rarely looked at since, with a shut-off somewhere behind the cabinetry that may never have been turned. Where a remodel rerouted the plumbing, the feed is not always where the owner believes it is, and finding that out during a repair rather than before one costs an hour.

Access is the other thing to plan for. Reaching the fill valve and the rear connections means bringing the column forward on its rails far enough to work behind it, with the doors clear and the floor protected. On a flush installation with stone returned tight to the trim, that is the slow part of the job rather than the repair itself, and it belongs in the estimate rather than in a surprise.
