Ventilation is the appliance owners think about least and the one that most changes how a kitchen behaves. Thermador builds wall and island hoods, professional hoods sized for the rangetops, integrated liners and downdraft units, mostly around remote or in-hood blowers. All of them can be quietly losing performance for years without anyone noticing, because the loss is gradual and there is nothing to compare it against.
Weak extraction usually starts at the far end
The intake is the part an owner can see, so it is the part that gets cleaned. Baffles and mesh filters go through the dishwasher, the hood is wiped down, and the extraction is still poor.
The exit is where the problem usually lives. Most hoods in this area discharge through a duct to a wall or roof cap with a damper — a hinged or gravity flap that opens when the blower runs and closes when it stops, to keep weather and insects out. On the coast, that damper is exposed to salt air from the outside on every one of its surfaces. It stiffens, corrodes at the pivot, and eventually either sticks shut or opens only part-way. The blower is then working against a restriction it was never sized for, and it moves a fraction of its rated air while sounding exactly as it always did.
The other exit problem is the duct run itself. Grease condenses on the inside of a duct, especially on the horizontal sections and at every elbow, and a duct that has served a heavily used rangetop for a decade can have a meaningfully smaller bore than it started with. We check the run before we condemn a blower.
Blower noise
A blower that has become loud is telling you which failure it has.
A rising hum with the volume of the airflow unchanged is generally the motor bearings. A rattle that appears at one speed and vanishes at another is usually an imbalance — a build-up of grease on one part of the impeller, or a blade that has been knocked during a filter clean. A grinding or scraping noise means something has moved out of alignment and should not be left running.
Where only some speeds work, the fault is in the control rather than the motor. Multi-speed blowers are switched through a control module, and the module fails progressively rather than all at once.
Salt, and where it gets in
A remote blower mounted in an attic or on an exterior wall within a mile of the Atlantic lives in salt air continuously. We see corroded motor housings, seized damper pivots and green bloom on the terminal blocks inside the blower’s own junction box. That last one produces some of the most confusing faults we attend: a hood that works most days, then fails, then works again.
Hood control panels suffer too. A touch control set into stainless within reach of an open window on the ocean side of a house is a circuit board a few millimetres from salt-laden air.
Downdrafts
Downdraft units add a mechanism to everything above: a motor, a drive belt or lead screw, and a set of limit switches that tell the control where the vent is. A downdraft that rises part-way and stops is almost always mechanical obstruction or a limit switch that has stopped reporting, not a dead motor. Grease and crumbs falling into the slot are what obstructs it, and that is worth knowing because it is preventable.
